Christmas Bonfires
The longest night of the year is lit up by the bonfires lit in the villages of Amyntaio at midnight on 23 December.
An ancient custom, an annual purification from the evils of the year that is drawing to a close, an invocation to the Christ Child for good fortune in the homes, for the livestock, and for the harvest to come after winter.
Local bands accompany young and old alike in singing traditional Christmas carols, setting a special tone for the start of the festive season.
