Monastery of Saints Panteleimon and Evboule

The Monastery of Saints Panteleimon and Evboule is located between Lakes Vegoritida and Petron, 500 m west of the village of Agios Panteleimon. It is 8 km from Amyntaio and 40 km from Florina.

At the newly established women’s monastery of Saint Panteleimon and Evboule in Agios Panteleimon, in the Municipality of Amyntaio, visitors and pilgrims have the opportunity to draw spiritual strength by attending the services, to experience moments of peace and spiritual renewal in the monastery’s elegant surroundings, and to purchase pure, handmade products.

The Holy Monastery of Saint Panteleimon and Evboule, which is a reconstruction of the historic Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, despite being built at a different location from the original. The monastic tradition in the Amyntaio basin region dates back quite a long time, as a men’s monastery operated in the community of Saint Panteleimon during the Palaiologan dynasty.

According to accounts by French travelers and historians, it was destroyed in 1830 by a massive flood, when a powerful earthquake caused the waters of Lake Vegoritis to overflow. The only thing that survived this natural disaster is the windmill used by the monks, which can still be seen today as one walks through the village’s picturesque alleys.

His Eminence Bishop Theoklitos found a reference in the records of the Church of Greece to the existence of a ruined men’s monastery in the community of Saint Panteleimon, a fact that served as the impetus for him to proceed with the establishment of the women’s monastery in 2004 (Presidential Decree 92/2004, Government Gazette 69/A/2004).

Thus, on the site of a former church dedicated to Saint George, construction of the monastic complex began, involving the restoration of the space that became the abbot’s quarters, as well as the creation of storage and auxiliary spaces, a workshop, guest quarters, and monastic cells. Essentially, the operation of the Monastery constitutes the reestablishment of the old men’s monastery, thereby continuing the monastic tradition of the monks.

The Monastery houses the relics of Saint Panteleimon, Saint Paraskevi, and other saints.

The schedule of services includes:

a) Midnight Office

b) Matins

c) Divine Liturgy

d) Vespers

e) Compline

The monastery celebrates its patronal feast three times a year, specifically:

a) On March 30, the feast of Saint Evboule, in honour of the mother of Saint Panteleimon

b) On July 27, the feast of Saint Panteleimon, patron saint and protector of the local community of Agios Panteleimon in the Municipality of Amyntaio.

c) Saint George (April 23—a movable feast), when the church of the Holy Monastery, which existed previously, is honoured.

Places of worship, such as monasteries, churches, and chapels, constitute a religious heritage spanning centuries, the richness of which is held in high esteem.

Although the monastery’s integration into the realm of religious tourism is still in its early stages, it nevertheless sees an increase in visitors year after year, especially during religious festivals and on Sundays, when pilgrims combine Christian worship with recreational activities in the region’s magnificent natural surroundings.
